Ten Strategies for Learning More Effectively

1. Boosting Your Memory by:

  • Exercising regularly
  • Spending time socializing with other people (give your mind a break)
  • Getting at least seven hours of sleep
  • Eliminating distractions to increase your focus on what you are learning
  • Making concepts easier to remember using a simple organizing method
  • Spending a few minutes describing something new you just learned
  • Using visual aids like a portable simulation lab kit to practice
  • Reading the out loud what you are studying

2. Practicing using application-based learning is the most effective.

3. Learning in multiple ways rather than just the traditional way (hybrid learning).

4. Focusing on one thing at a time. Put away your phone and anything else that would distract you and focus on ONE THING. Stop multi-tasking because studying will take longer, and you’ll remember less.

5. Teaching and/or explaining what you just learned to someone else.

6. Breaking down studying into shorter blocks of time. Each time you begin again, review what you learned before your break.

7. Retrieving answers from your memory, then looking up the answer to make sure you were correct.

8. Linking visuals in class or your book to what they mean in your own words.

9. Understanding how and when you learn the best when it comes to retention.

10. Testing yourself after you finish smaller sections of material, before you go on.
